Independent living
My life has carried on much the same as in my previous home just north of the river. I am still involved with many outside activities; it’s only 15 minutes’ walk to the Kings Road (or three minutes to the local bus stop if I’m feeling lazy) or one can go on shopping trips in the minibus. I still go out every morning to pick up the paper, stretch my legs and do my shopping; my apartment’s only three minutes from the bus stop that takes me up to the King’s Road. It’s also a great launch pad for me to travel; next on my list: Morocco and the Far East, Cyprus with my daughters and then a cruise on the Rhone. Whilst living here, I have learned to cook and tried to become a proficient cook – with limited success. When my wife, Janet, was alive I wasn’t allowed in the kitchen because she said I’d make too much mess. Recently, I cooked supper for my daughter and by the end of the evening I realised my wife was right – I’d used every pan in the cupboard! Frozen meals delivered to the door are so easy.

Home comforts
Moving to Battersea Place, there was no need to downsize – my square footage actually increased. My apartment is beautifully light and well-insulated, and my heating bills are remarkably low. The kitchen has a double-deck dishwasher and wine fridge, that keeps both red wine and white wine at the correct temperature at the same time. This place is ideal for entertaining, and I’ve had lots of dinner parties already. Usually, I like to invite my friends up for pre-dinner drinks and then we go down to the restaurant and the chef prepares us an excellent supper. Then it’s back to my apartment for coffee on the terrace – overlooking Battersea Park. My daughter often walks her dog there when she visits. I have everything I need here; the same doctor, the same church, even the same cleaner – there’s no insistence on using the staff. It’s good to know care suites are there – just in case. I know that both my daughters appreciate the fact that I’m being looked out for and looked after so well.
